Habitat Tuateawa January Newsletter

January 2016
Congratulations to the Tuateawa Community!
As most of you will know we have had within our community boundaries, a kaka nest with 2
surviving chicks. The final stages where the chicks leave the nest and are on low branches or
the ground are very risky especially as they are noisy calling their parents continually.
We asked you to support these chicks by having a curfew for cats(7pm to 7am) and ensuring
dogs were under control and on leashes when off the section.
Our community chicks survived and fledged successfully. Thanks to all of us. A small
community group also regularly checked the multiple traps and bait stations in the area of the
nest. Well done to these wonderfully caring community members.

At about 2 weeks when found Estimated 8 weeks – secondary feathers showing.
We did not disturb the chicks as we did not want the parents to abandon the nest hence the
infrequency of photos.

Fledging took place just after New Year in all the terrible weather, the chicks have been moved
to denser bush. The chick (in the left photo) is begging for food by flapping its wings and the
parent is obliging. At the time of these photos the nikau is in full fruit. The parent skillfully uses
its marvelous beak to extract one ripe berry at a time. The chicks are still needing partially
digested and regurgitated fruit at this point.
